Protecting Your Work

POST-POUR

  • After your pouring is complete, it is super important that you keep your work covered to prevent dust, hair, and other particles from falling into your resin and ruining your work.
  • It is also important to keep the temperature warm (somewhere between 23-28 degrees C/70-80 degrees F) and to keep the temperature static for the 24 hour curing period. If the temperature fluctuates, it could affect the curing process, resulting in an uneven/puckered surface.
  • Once covered, we can leave them for around 24 hours and come back to remove them from the moulds!
  • Note: If you leave them longer than 24 hours (i.e. a few days) they will likely be too hard to cut. We will review this in the next lesson. If your resin was quite warm while you were working with it, and/or if your room is very warm, this process may be accelerated. If this is the case, try to check on the coasters around the 16-20 hour mark. At 24 hours they could be fully cured and too hard to cut.
  • Note: I have also tried a brand of resin called Magic Resin, which cures much faster. In this case, I have to cut the coasters at the 11-12 hour mark, otherwise they are rock hard by 24 hours. You may want to do a small test batch first, or check your coasters at the 11 hour mark to see how cured they are. Just be careful not to leave any marks or finger prints in them!
